This is a formal announcement and call for presentations for the First Pax Turcica Conference to be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at Columbia University in New York. The conference is dedicated to the 91st anniversary of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR), the first secular democratic establishment in the Turkic and Muslim world. Attached below are the flier and the  preliminary program topic summary. Please, feel free to make suggestions and submit presentation proposals to conference@paxturci ca.org starting now. The conference is open to students, scholars and Turkic-American community activists across the United States.

Azerbaijani- American Council (AAC), Azerbaijan Society of America (ASA) with the help of The Federation of Turkish American Associations (FTAA) announce the First Pax Turcica Conference dedicated to the 91st anniversary of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR), the first secular democratic establishment in the Turkic and Muslim world, to be held on May 16, 2009 at Columbia University in New York City.

CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS

The conference program will comprise of three panels with 15-minute presentations scheduled at each panel. Panel 1: Turkic Linguistic, Historical and Political Identity

  • Founding ideologies of ADR and Turkish Republic , the works of Turkic publicists of the early 20th century
  • Current ideological trends and their impacts in the Turkic world
  • Democracy and universal suffrage in Turkic-speaking nations

Panel 2: Geopolitics in and around the Turkic World

  • The impact of Turkic nations on global energy
  • Social development, democratic processes and media
  • Islam and secular statehood in the Turkic world, contemporary religious trends

Panel 3: Turkic Unity: Grassroots and Diaspora

  • The unity of Turkic communities in the United States
  • Intercultural and interfaith dialog between Turkic and non-Turkic communities
  • Turkic grassroots and diaspora, impact on the U.S. socio-political life
